What is Salvia?
Salvia, or salvia divinorum is a soft-leaved green plant which contains a powerful psychoactive chemical known as Salvinorin. S. divinorum. It has been used traditionally in Mexico for healing and divination and became available around the world starting in the early 1990's. Strong effects can be difficult to find from smoking dried leaf, but extracts of the drug can cause dramatic, sometimes frightening, symptoms. Many people who try Salvia do not find the effects at all pleasant and choose not to repeat the experience.
What does Salvia look like?
Salvia is usually found in the form of dried leaves. Salvia divinorum can be taken orally (chewing the leaves) or by smoking it through a pipe. When the leaves are chewed, the juices of the plant are held in the mouth to increase absorption.
What does Salvia do to you?
Salvia affects the opioid receptors of the brain. Opioids are powerful natural drugs of the brain. The effects of opioids are due to decreased perception of pain, decreased reaction to pain as well as increased pain tolerance.

What are the risks?
A sitter (a monitoring, sober person) is absolutely essential if you are taking Salvia. Doing Salvia in an insecure, unfamiliar place may lead first-time users to freak out, become confused, injure themselves, fall, or do things that might harm others.
Although it is not addictive, or particularly dangerous, salvia should not be used in public places or in the presence of weapons. Combining other drugs with Salvia usually produces negative effects.
The drug itself is not harmfull to the body, it is the actions commited when under the influence that send users to the emergency room.

Salvia and the Law
Despite its effects being compared to the effects of LSD, Salvia is currently legal in most countries. In Canada, the drug is illegal, but failure to enforce this law has resulted in a "laissez-faire" attitude. Websites and shopkeepers are still advertising the plant as a perfectly legal trip for Canadians. Even though it is legal to possess Salvia, it is not a recreational drug. It produces a profoundly introspective state of awareness and has been used in cultural meditation ceremonies.

Have you ever felt like the walls were breathing while looking at them? Have you ever felt you could look at the T.V. as if you were looking through a window into a new world? I have, after I smoked Salvia for the second time. It left me emotionally disturbed, and a feeling as if I have a speech impediment. I can think the words but they come out wrong. The first time I did salvia I'll admit, it was the best thing that could ever happen to me. I had a wonderful time, though I walked around when I shouldn't have. I have had these persistent visual disturbances for just about 2-3 weeks. I've also had bad memory because of salvia.

I have experienced the majority of household name drugs like coke, weed, acid, mushrooms, speed, pcp, microdots, mescaline, qualuudes, and ecstasy. I am 57 years old and was a protestor (and local subversive magazine editor) during the Vietnam War.
To the point. I was at the local pub when one of my friends handed me a dime sack as a birthday gift (not weed). He told me to take it home and enjoy it in a safe place. It was 'Salvia Divinorum', I was told, a rare mexican hallucinogenic plant. It was blessed with a 13x extraction for my pleasure.
After a few slew of drinks I decided to get a cab ride, as to avoid another DUI. While riding home I pulled out the little birthday baggie. I was really drunk and must have confused it for weed. The cab driver wanted to share a a few hits. As he drove, we kept smoking until the bowl was cashed. We both agreed this was terrible weed. Next thing I remember was laughing hysterically with 'Mark' the cabdriver when a loud thud and glass shattering made us laugh harder. I cannot remember much of what was said but, we both got out of the cab alright. I could not stop laughing. It must've been only 3 minutes. I held onto the roof of the car to get a sense of balance, I fell on my ass getting out! As the laughter faded I realized I was screaming at the top of my lungs 'I'm waiting for someone to take the pipe!' I must've been shouting for a while because my throat was sore.
Now I realized it only could've been 8 minutes since I became coherent again. But the cab crashed into an abandonded house. People were already surrounding the scene in curiosity. Two hands grabbed my arm and yanked me away from the cab. It was 'Mark' the cab driver. He told me the rest of the trip home was free if I never told anyone. I never saw Mark again. But that Salvia scared the living shit out of me. It resembled PCP a little bit. Never in public again!!!
